Merit Badge Days

Outdoor Classroom

Merit Badge Days are offered monthly at Valley Crest Farm and Preserve. These sessions are open to all Boy Scouts. Scouts may sign up individually or with others from their troop.

Merit Badge Days are designed for scouts to complete merit badges with minimal home study. Scouts will work one- on- one with a counselor to complete all requirements and gain a thorough understanding of each topic discussed.

Wilderness Survival

September 15. 9am-1pm.

Complete requirements to earn your Wilderness Survival badge. Learn outdoor first aid, hazards and more through fun, hands-on activities. Two prerequisites (#5- Put together a personal survival kit and explain how each item in it could be useful and #8- Improvise a natural shelter. For the purpose of this demonstration, use techniques that have little negative impact on the environment. Spend a night in your shelter.) are required. Bring lunch or a snack.

Soil and Water Conservation

October 8. 9am-2pm.

Use your day off from school to complete all requirements of the Soil and Water Conservation merit badge at this interactive workshop. Study specialized, managed wildlife habitat and learn about the soil and water conservation techniques used in agriculture. Conduct several experiments to examine the physical properties of water. By the end of the workshop, scouts will be familiar with soil types, watershed management, agriculture’s affects on soil/water conservation and much more!

This workshop will be held on October 8 from 9am until 2pm. Scouts should bring lunch, plenty of water, comfortable shoes and clothing for the outdoors and hiking, a blue card and notebook or clipboard that may be used to write outdoors.

Forestry

November 17. 9am-12noon.

Take to the trails and learn to identify the many trees, shrubs, vines and more present in New Jersey! We will discuss what an invasive species is and the impact it can have on the environment. We will also cover forest management methods and discuss how to mitigate the risks forests face.

Please complete the following requirement before class:

4-Describe what forest management means, including the following:

a. Multiple-use management
b. Sustainable forest management
c. Even-aged and uneven-aged management and silvicultural systems associated with each type.
d. Intermediate cuttings.
e. The role of prescribed burning and related forest management practices.

Scouts should come to class with plenty of water, comfortable shoes for hiking, appropriate clothes for the outdoors, a blue card, pen/pencil, and a notebook or clipboard to write on while hiking. Scouts may also bring a snack along.

Mammal Study

December 13. 5-6:30pm

Join us to complete your Mammal Study badge. After you’ve completed a prerequisite project, you will be completely done with the requirements of this badge.

Please complete requirement 5 (Work with your counselor, select and carry out one project that will influence the numbers of one or more mammals.) before class to finish the badge. You may complete the project afterwards and have your blue card signed at a later date. Building a bat box is a lovely way to complete this requirement. If scouts are interested in a different project, they may check in with Rachel at education@valleycrestfarmnj.org to ensure it is appropriate.

Environmental Science (Eagle Required)

January 8 AND 9. 5-7pm. Must attend both days.

Explore the world of environmental science through this workshop. Scouts will examine issues such as erosion, animal populations, water cleanliness and so much more! This eagle required badge will be entirely completed through the workshop.

Camping (Eagle Required)

February 9. 1-4:30pm

Complete several of the requirements for the Camping badge. While we may not finish the entire badge, scouts may bring proof of completion for any requirements not covered. Requirements 1-3, 5, 6, 8abc and 10 will all be finished through this workshop. Bird Study

March 23. 9am-2pm.

 

Learn to use a field guide and binoculars and head to the trail to observe the birds arriving back to New Jersey after a long winter. This badge will be completed in its entirety through this workshop.

Scouts should bring binoculars if possible, plenty of water, comfortable hiking shoes, a lunch, and appropriate clothes for the outdoors. They should bring a blue card as well.

Insect Study

April 13. 9am-12noon.

Study the world of insects as you learn to identify the critters that may be found in our woods, meadows and beyond. Get up close with each specimen and examine the elements that make them unique from other insects.

You will need to complete requirement 9 outside of the classroom [Raise an insect through the complete metamorphosis from its larval stage to its adult stage (e.g. raise a butterfly or moth from a caterpillar).] Mealworms are a particularly simple insect to raise through its life stage, through scouts should feel free to raise any insect that goes through complete metamorphosis and is not a protected species.

Scouts will complete all other requirements for this badge. Requirement 9 may be completed before or after the workshop is completed. Scouts should bring along a blue card, comfortable shoes and appropriate clothing for the outdoors, and any field guides that they have on insects (optional).

Fish & Wildlife Management

May 25. 9am-12pm.

Join us for a hands-on exploration of the fish and wildlife present in New Jersey. Head out on the trail to identify wildlife species of all types and examine the methods put in place to protect those species. Finally, examine the stomach contents of a fish in an effort to understand how fish interact with their environment.

All requirements except #5 will be completed in this workshop. Scouts may complete any option of listed under requirement #5 in their efforts to complete the badge. This requirement is detailed below-

Do ONE of the following:

a. Construct, erect, and check regularly at least two artificial nest boxes (wood duck, bluebird, squirrel, etc.) and keep written records for one nesting season.
b. Construct, erect, and check regularly bird feeders and keep written records of the kinds of birds visiting the feeders.
c. Develop and implement a fishery improvement project or a backyard wildlife habitat improvement project. Share the results with your counselor.
d. Design and construct a wildlife blind near a game trail, water hole, salt lick, bird feeder, or birdbath and take good photographs or make sketches from the blind of any combination of 10 wild birds, mammals, reptiles, or amphibians.

Scouts should come to the workshop prepared with appropriate shoes and clothing for the outdoors, plenty of water, a notebook or clipboard to write against in the outdoors and a blue card.
