Each week we will explore a new element of survival in nature. From fire building to finding your way- this class will allow older students a chance to practice outdoor skills. This class will include hiking and a lot of activity so students should be ready to be on the move! It is suggested that students come for the entire series but if your child can only attend one or a small selection, please call (908) 238 9696 or email firstname.lastname@example.org to reserve your spot for single classes. Individual classes cost $12/ child or $10/child when you reserve for two or more children. This series is intended for children aged 10- 14.
Week 1 9/20/2017. Safety and First Aid. Learn about the hazards that the outdoors present. There are many situations which could arise during outdoor events such as dehydration, temperature changes, sun exposure and more. We will review these risks and discuss how to avoid and remedy them.
Week 2 9/27/17. Fire Building. Learn about the best way to build a fire- what materials should you use or avoid, what shape should the structure be? Practice various methods of fire starting including flint and steel.
Week 3 10/4/17. Campfire Cooking. How can one cook over the campfire? What foods work best? Learn how to cook over an open fire and practice your skills!
Week 4 10/11/17. Shelter. Practice building shelters out of various materials- manmade and natural. Discuss how to stay safe during storms and natural disasters if you are outdoors.
Week 5 10/18/17. Worst Case Scenario. Prepare for the worst case scenario. Learn how to clean water for drinking, priorities for survival and how to be found.
Week 6 10/25/17. Navigation. Become skilled in the use of a compass, learn natural navigation and how to find your way.
