VCFP has been bustling with growth and movement over the last week. We have been so lucky to have had so many wonderful people stop by for Pick Your Own raspberries and sugar snap peas, our Summer Crew Explorer series, our CSA, and to enjoy our beautiful farm. In between meeting and getting to know our great community — our team has been working hard now that the growing season is in full swing. The last weeks have been full of tending to the massive boom in growth seen on the farm. Our tomatoes alone grew close to six inches in just one week!
Our team planted the second round of green beans, squash, cucumbers, carrots, and basil. We are all so excited to enjoy these delicious summer veggies. In about a week or two the first round will be ready for harvest! In addition to planting more veggies, Peter staked both our tomatoes for CSA and Cherry tomatoes for pick-your-own. Stay tuned for updates regarding when they will be ready!
As we near peach season, the trees are looking incredible. Over the last week, VCFP finished thinning the peach orchard — a very time consuming but necessary endeavor. Peach tree thinning involves removing excess peach fruits from the branches before the peaches are fully developed. This is an important task for the health of the tree. Without thinning the branches can develop too many peaches and will eventually snap under the weight of the fruit. In addition, the tree will expend all of its energy producing fruit rather than form next years peach buds.
Finally, we paid our beautiful dahlias a great deal of attention this week setting up the netting needed to ensure they are able to thrive for this year’s Peach & Dahlia Festival. The festival will be on August 18th and provide many family-friendly activities celebrating a bountiful peach harvest and the beautiful dahlias grown by our Farm Director, Butch.
